Animals can lose trust in humans, in themselves, and in the world they find themselves in. This often happens when they have been mistreated, experienced trauma, or even simply when they move to a new home and are naturally of a sensitive, fearful nature.
A lack of trust can show itself in many ways — hiding, running away, cowering, shutting down, or fearful aggression. All of these responses are rooted in self-protection, and all take time, patience, and love to help rebuild trust.
Healing isn’t a race, and it’s not a competition. It takes as long as it takes — sometimes months, sometimes years. And that’s okay. We can only go as far and as fast as the animal can cope with.
Trust Is Built in Micro Moments
It is sometimes possible for animals to rebuild trust in leaps and bounds when we get the right approach and the right tools to help, but more usually for sensitive animals trust comes in small steps, making slow but sure progress. Sometimes these steps are barely noticeable unless we really pay attention but over time they build up to a solid, grounded trust.
Look for a softer eye, an easing of tension in the body, a deeper sleep, a willingness to take a step closer, a brief moment of curiosity where there was fear before.
Every small choice to engage safely and every calm presence you offer is a brick in the foundation of trust. Even when it feels like nothing has changed, trust is growing.
Listening Is the First Step
Trust grows where animals feel heard.
The very first thing to do is stop, pause and observe what your animal is showing you or telling you. You need to be in a calm, quiet, peaceful state yourself to notice the really tiny signs they show you. The more of these you can spot, the more your animal will feel listened to and understood.
How do they move, what do their eyes tell you, what do they avoid, what calms them, what does their body language tell you?
Another way of listening is by telepathic communication. Everyone can learn to do this. A soul connection based on love and being open to listening with the intention of helping.
Offering essential oils for them to choose or walk away from is another form of listening. We are respecting their wishes, not coercing them into anything. If we do this in a mindful state (vital for observing their reactions) – in the present with them – that is really powerful listening. It is one of the many reasons I love zoopharmacognosy.
Sometimes the most powerful act is simply noticing. By paying attention to subtle signals, we can respond with gentleness and respect, and our animals can begin to feel understood.
Listening is empowering. It tells them: “I see you. I hear you. You are safe here.”

Emotional Healing Supports Trust And Empowerment
Fear often has roots in past trauma.
Flower essences, energy healing and self-selection essential oils work gently to support the nervous system and emotion processing, releasing past traumas.
The act of offering essential oils in a mindful state and allowing your animal to say “yes” or “no” is an act of listening that empowers them and helps them feel safe and build trust and confidence.
These tools allow animals to work through their emotions at their own pace, helping them feel grounded, safe, and ready to trust. Healing on this level is subtle but profound, and it creates lasting change from the inside out.
Giving an animal a choice, not just in the remedies, but in every day life creates a feeling of safety and trust and connection with you. Where can you give more choice to your animal today?
Patience Is Key
Rebuilding trust takes time. A solid foundation built securely and to last matters far more than speed. The journey in itself is rewarding too when you take the time to notice not only your animal but you as well.
By being patient and giving the animal space to heal at their own pace we honour their needs and strengthen the bond between human and animal.
Patience is a virtue all animals (and people) need to be the recipient of, but sensitive animals need it the most and it pays dividends when you are patient with them and patient with their journey from fear to trust.
I have always been a patient person but sensitive animals have taught me to tune it to a fine art, they are such great teachers if we let them.
Trust is earned steadily through compassion, respect, patience and kindness.
